NEWS FROM SABAH

Youths should emulate Aron, says Sairin
Published on: Sunday, April 19, 2009 Daily Express.

Keningau: Youths should discard the notion that they will get higher income in big towns than toiling on their lands in the villages.
Assistant Rural Development Minister Datuk Sairin Karno hoped the youths here would consider working in their kampungs, particularly opening up agriculture land.
He said many lands are being left idle in the villages here, which should not be the case. In fact, he said in this testing economic time, the youths should return to their respective village to work on their lands and improve their socio-economy.
He said this when asked to comment on the effort by the former Keningau Teachers' Institute, Aron Warso, 58, who has taken the initiative to venture into the agro-business.
Aron, who was also a former district education officer, had started out rearing 50 head of cattle in his land in 2006 and now his cattle population has increased to no less than 200.
Not stopping there, Aron took up the course to rear leeches and earthworms and now has started a lucrative business in his backyard about 8km from town.
At the same time, the enterprising Aron, also grew gaharu or sandalwood trees in his nursery.
According to him, he is exporting the leeches to Peninsular Malaysia, Hong Kong and even the United States for medicinal purposes, while the earthworms are being exported to Taiwan and Japan to replace fertilisers in growing vegetable.
"I am feeling healthier. Previously I often spent my time playing golf but now I am more interested in rearing leeches, earthworms and planting gaharu," he said.
In this respect, Aron hoped his effort would serve as a valuable guide to the youths here
